Repairs to one of Newtown's river bridges are underway

Repairs to a bridge that links Dolerw Park to the town centre are being reviewed.

Dolerw Bridge has been in need of some maintenance for some time, and Newtown's Mayor, Cllr Peter Lewington, who is also a local Powys county councillor, has been liaising with the county council to undertake repairs.

The suspension bridge was opened over 50 years ago in 1973. It's a single span, two-tower structure and is considered to be the 28th bridge from the source of the River Severn.

In a report to Newtown Town Council, the not-for-profit group Open Newtown reported that some work has been undertaken by Powys County Council and more is due to take place.

"PCC Highways are reviewing Dolerw bridge maintenance," said the report. 

It is understood the maintenance includes wooden steps on Dolerw Park side with a handrail introduced, asphalt surface work completed on the pathway over it, and barrier position expanded to allow mobility scooter users to access it.

It said drainage holes are yet to be introduced as well as lighting maintenance.
