Mayor expresses solidarity with French twinned town

Newtown’s mayor has written to the French community the town is twinned with to express support and solidarity for it following the atrocities in Paris nearly two weeks ago.

Cllr Richard Edwards has written to the mayor of Les Herbiers following the terrorist attacks in Paris in which 130 people died.

In his letter, Cllr Edwards said: “I am writing to express our support for France at this difficult time. This is a terrible event clearly designed to incite fear and terror into the French population.

“We must all come together in such times and we here in Newtown have been thinking about our friends in Les Herbiers. We stand united with all those who have been affected by these acts of violence.”

He added: “Newtown Town Council stood in respect reflecting on the impact and trauma of the event. It is even more poignant that we would be doing so again for our friends in France only a few days after we in Newtown stood in silence and respect to the fallen on Armistice Day.

“This year has seen our own twinning relationship strengthen and we must live in hope that such friendships across borders and between communities will triumph over the evil of terrorism.”

Newtown has been twinned with Les Herbiers for many years and undertakes a range of twinning activities each year, including trips and visits.

A town twinning committee oversees the relationship.
