Newtown’s new Welsh-medium primary school is on schedule to open in January.

Work on the £7million school next to the town’s high school, off Dolfor Road, is underway and First Minister Carwyn Jones who visited the site said he was pleased the Welsh Government had helped fund the development which is a replacement for the town’s Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd.

Funding for the school, which is on a site next door to Newtown High School on Dolfor Road, was received from Welsh Government last summer as part of the 21 Century Schools and Education Programme.

Cabinet Member for Schools, Councillor Arwel Jones said: “I am delighted that the First Minister has been able to visit the site and see the tremendous progress that has been made since work started in January.

“It is very apt in the year that the county hosted the National Eisteddfod in Meifod that this 300-pupil Welsh-medium which will undoubtedly provide a significant boost to the Welsh language in the county is making such excellent progress and nearing completion.

“I would be delighted if the First Minister could return for the school’s official opening in 2016,” he said.

First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones said: “It’s great to see the good progress being made on Newtown’s new Welsh Medium school. We’ve provided nearly £3.9 million towards this project and I’m sure, when completed, it’ll be a fantastic learning environment for young people in the area.”
