Swimmers take the "English Channel" challenge

20/07/2015 @ 08:10

A group of Newtown swimmers have swam the English Channel - well the equivalent distance in the pool at Maldwyn Leisure Centre.

Members of Maldwyn Training Zone set themselves a challenge to swim the equivalent of the Channel as fast as possible.

Training Zone is for adult swimmers who want to improve their technique and build up stamina and is held at the leisure centre every Wednesday between 8.30pm and 10pm.

Although the shortest coast to coast distance is around 21 miles, the swimmers chose to allow for tides, currents and bad weather and set a target of 25 miles.

This totalled 1,630 lengths and the 25 miles was achieved in 82 minutes.

Swimmers taking part included Elaine Currie, Debbie, Mike and John Cade, Eldrydd Lamp, Rob Lazenby, John Leafe, Nick Bradley, Sara Smith, Jonathan Steele, Ian Tomley, Julie Turner and Ceri Williams.

Length counters were Yas Bell, Owain Betts, Daisy and Morris Smith and Maldwyn Training Zone Coach Sam Williams.
