Town pushes for more walkers

02/07/2015 @ 10:01

A group of keen Newtown walkers have launched an initiative to entice more walkers into the town, as well as encouraging local people to get their walking shoes out and see more of their community.

Over 50 miles of local walkways are being promoted through a new leaflet entitled Walking Newtown.

Eleven circular walks have been identified and set out in the leaflet, most of which start and end at the clock tower at The Cross in Newtown.

A group of volunteers set out to establish the initiative four years ago and have been backed by a range of organisations, including Powys County Council, Ramblers Cymru, the Newtown GP Practice and the Canal and Rivers Trust, as well as Montgomeryshire AM, Russell George.

The group see the initiative as encouraging more walkers into the town to enjoy the local area, supporting the local economy, as well as encouraging more local people to walk as part of their fitness.

Walks can be found on the Newtown Town Council website www.newton.org.uk or can email newtownwalks@hotmail.com.
