Could Newtown become a "Food Town"?

20/04/2015 @ 11:31

A conference has considered Newtown becoming a “food town” through the area growing, producing and selling its own food.

The “Food, the Future” event took place at the Themes restaurant at NPTC Group’s Newtown college campus.

The College’s working restaurant, staffed solely by catering and hospitality students, hosted the event that was led by Organic Centre Wales (OCW).

A wide range of food interest groups came together for the conference, including Cwm Harry, Mid Wales Land Trust and the Town Council.

NPTC Group Head of School, Sue Lloyd-Jones, and lecturer in agriculture, Martin Watkin, were also in attendance.

The objective was to look at the local food sector and how more food can be produced locally and sustainably.

Pam Warhurst, co-founder and chair of Incredible Edible in Todmorden, England, gave an informative and enthusiastic speech about how those in her community came together to encourage learning from field to classroom and kitchen.

The Incredible Edible initiative is dedicated to growing food locally by planting on unused land.

Up for discussion was the future of Newtown as a food town during which the attendees were treated to food produced and prepared by the college’s catering and hospitality students.
