One new sports area opened as another falls to litter

Just as Newtown Town Council celebrates the refurbishment of a games area in the town, another has been criticised for the mess it’s been left in by people using it.

The town council has spent thousands of pounds bringing an old area of asphalt at Trenor into use with a new fenced off area for multi-sport games.

The area can be used by people for ball games and others sports.

However, local international runner Andrew Davies, who was 16th in this year's London Marathon, has tweeted his disappointment at seeing another area, the town’s state park, left in a mess by youths with litter and rubbish spread across it.

The runner, who has also represented Great Britain and lectures at NTPC Group's Newtown college campus, tweeted: “Disgusting scenes at Newtown’s skate park” with a photo of the scene confirming a large amount of litter left strewn across the area.

He tagged Powys County Council and Keep Wales Tidy in the post.

Meanwhile, the town council hopes its new multi-sport area will add to the amenities available for the community. “Refurbishment of the Trenor games area has been complete, repairs and maintenance to the area including new fencing has transformed a tired looking patch of tarmac into an excellent place for all ages to enjoy a range of sports in a safe and well maintained environment,” said a statement.
