The Montgomeryshire Green Party has officially announced that they are fielding Richard Challoner (pictured) as their candidate in the June 8 General Election.

As revealed by MyNewtown yesterday, five candidates have been nominated for the Montgomeryshire constituency.

Richard is a north Powys resident who has stood for the Green Party in Montgomeryshire in previous elections.

“I am standing for the Wales Green Party in the election because I have become increasingly concerned about the damage being done to the environment, and to the lives of ordinary people, by the policies and decisions of the current government,” he said.

“Montgomeryshire faces particular social and economic challenges, for instance in terms of access to health services, education and employment for young people, transport and housing. In an area where the agricultural industry is the mainstay of the local economy the effects of climate change will be felt early and will be far reaching.”

The party said that recent elections have shown an increase in support for The Green Party, and last week the first Green member was elected onto Powys Council.

A total of five names have been confirmed. The Conservatives have again adopted Glyn Davies to defend the seat and he will face opposition from Jane Dodds (Liberal Democrat), Mr Challoner (Green Party), Aled Morgan Hughes (Plaid Cymru) and Iwan Wyn Jones adopted to challenge for Labour.
