The manager of a five-star holiday home park near Newtown has set himself a mission of making it the best in Wales.
Steve Lewis knows exactly the standards required at Gwernydd Hall Holiday Park, New Mills, to achieve his dream, as he previously managed a sales team at Brynteg Holiday Home Park in Llanrug, which was named best Park in Great Britain in 2002.
“I love it here and we have lots of things that other parks don’t have,” he said. “The facilities are fantastic, the views are stunning and, with little bit of fine tuning, I am confident it will evolve to become the best park in Wales. That’s my aim.”
He leads a team of 16 at Gwernydd Hall and is totally focused on delivering the best service. “People work so hard and they come here to put their feet up. That’s why we must give them the five-star service they expect,” he said.

he 40-acre park, which has 218 caravan holiday home and luxury lodge pitches, overlooks the picturesque Rhiew Valley. Facilities include an indoor Tropical swimming pool and spa including Sauna and steam suites, Country pub and restaurant, cinema, fully equipped gym, bowling green, crazy golf, playgrounds, football field and two coarse fishing pools.
There’s also a vegetable garden and poly-tunnel where children on the park are encouraged to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
A ‘Be Active’ programme has been developed and launched for the new 2017 season to provide free swimming lessons, snorkelling, water walkerz, sea scooters, raft building, archery lessons and a whole lot more for holiday home owners on the park.
Mr Lewis is married to Tanya and they have two children, Olivia, 16 and Harvey, 11, who are pupils of Welshpool High School.
The son of a farmer from Uffington, near Shrewsbury, he has divided his career to date between the motor trade, with Furrows Group and Arthurs of Oswestry and the caravan industry, originally at Talacre Beach Group, near Prestatyn and then Brynteg Holiday Home Park.
He said he never realised when borrowing a touring caravan from Salop Leisure’s chairman Tony Bywater for his honeymoon in 1999 that he would end up working with him 18 years later.
Gwernydd Hall is one of the longest established holiday home parks in Wales, having opened in the 1940s. The hall was built in the 1840s as a ‘grace and favour’ property for an officer of Lord Clive of India, who himself had strong links with Powis Castle at Welshpool. Famous guests who stayed at the hall include the poet Rudyard Kipling.
