A large-scale census test will be carried out in north Powys as part of preparations for the 2021 Census, the county council has confirmed.

The Office of National Statistics (ONS) will be conducting the large-scale test in April which will cover 100,000 households across seven local authorities in England and Wales.  Montgomeryshire is one of the areas that has been chosen for the test.

The 2017 Census test will allow the ONS to test their systems and services and try out proposed new questions.

3,300 households in Montgomeryshire will receive a letter in the spring about the test.  The letter will also contain with a unique internet access code and instructions on how to complete the questionnaire.

Powys County Council is working closely with the ONS to raise awareness of the 2017 Census test.

Cllr Wynne Jones, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “A census is held in England and Wales every 10 years. It gathers information about the population and housing so that the government can plan and fund public services.

“Although the next census is four years away, preparations are already underway and this includes the Census test.

“I would urge householders who receive a letter in the spring to complete the questionnaire.  The information provided will help the ONS see whether the questions and the systems work.”

As part of the Census test, the ONS are recruiting 20 temporary staff in Montgomeryshire. To find out more about the jobs visit www.brookstreet.co.uk/CensusPowys
