It’s been all action at Newtown’s very own college farm with spring definitely in the air.
NPTC Group of Colleges’ Newtown campus is home to the college’s Fronlas Farm.
And since March it’s been a hive of activity with new additions to the livestock.
Over 600 ewes have lambed over March and the beginning of April and, with a further 50 ewes left to lamb, the work has far from stopped.
“This year the peak lambing has again coincided with the college’s Easter holidays meaning this has been a very busy time for the farm staff while students are enjoying the break.
“Having said that, most of the students have also been incredibly busy, despite the Easter holiday, as they too will have been busy helping out with lambing at their work placement farms,” said a college spokesperson.
Fronlas Farm has had quite an international feel recently while hosting eight students from Finland, Sweden and Holland who will be spending a busy two weeks at the farm studying Sheep Husbandry.
Then they will be heading off for a further two weeks at a local work placement as part of the farm’s AHENE project.
Dutch lambing student Elise Mersch has been enjoying her placement on the College farm since 12 March.
Elise is studying for a veterinary course and has spent the Easter break helping to deliver lambs at the College farm. Her tutors have also taken the trip from the Netherlands to assess her final exams.
