Council tenants in Newtown and throughout Montgomeryshire will be able to showcase their green-fingered talents in the annual garden competitions.

This year’s Powys County Council garden competition sees prizes on offer for the best gardens for:

- Best Kept Garden for households living in general housing
- Best Kept Senior Citizens Garden for households living in designated sheltered housing
- Best Kept Estate for an estate or group of general housing
- Best Kept Senior Citizens Estate for an estate or group of designated sheltered housing.

Prizes for the for the Best Kept Garden, OAP Garden, Estate, OAP Estate in Montgomeryshire are also up for grabs.

Tenants can also compete for the Best Vegetable Garden and Best Hanging Baskets or Containers.

Tenants may enter their own garden, estate or even nominate a neighbour’s garden but only if they have their permission.  County councillors and staff from the council’s Housing Services Team will also be able to nominate estates and individual gardens if the tenant has given permission.

Gardens that are entered into the competition will automatically be entered into a new shire category for this year’s competition, the Most Bee Friendly Garden.

Cllr Rosemarie Harris, Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “We know that we have lots of tenants who work very hard on their gardens and the competition is designed to give recognition to those people.

“We would like to encourage everyone who works on their garden.  Be it a container or hanging basket, a full blown flower display or even a tasty vegetable garden, we want to receive your entry.”

Judging will take place during July and the competition will culminate with presentation ceremonies where winners will be presented with trophies and prizes later on in the year.

Every Powys tenant will be sent a letter with a form regarding this year’s competition.  If you want to enter the competition then fill in the form and return before Friday 3 June.
