Preparations underway for lantern procession

13/10/2015 @ 04:02

A lantern procession, called a river of lights, celebrating the River Severn and its salmon will take place on Friday evening in Newtown.

Local people have been taking part in workshops with renowned artists as part of the project organised by the Severn Rivers Trust and Oriel Gallery in Newtown, making lanterns large and small.

These will be carried by local people from the Gravel car park, along the river walk to Dolerw Park on Friday evening, lighting up the autumn sky.

The spectacle will start at 6.30pm, travelling slowly along the walkway to the bridge between the Back Lane car park and Dolerw Park.

"It will echo the migration of the Atlantic salmon towards the tributaries where they spawn their young," said a Trust spokesperson.

"A spectacle of projected animations and a river of lights will welcome the procession as it arrives in Dolerw Park."

Workshops have been held at the Oriel Gallery over recent weeks with artists with people making various lanterns for the procession and the final display.
