Newtown mum welcomes baby deaths review

A Newtown mother has welcomed a review into baby deaths at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

An investigation has begun into a series of deaths involving babies at the hospital.

Kate and Andrew Barnett's son, Jenson, died two days after his birth at the hospital in 2013. He was one of at least seven babies whose deaths are to be investigated.

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHSTrust has already apologised for the deaths.

Each death is understood to have been deemed avoidable.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has ordered the review.

Mrs Barnet has told BBC News that after Jenson's inquest the hospital said things were going to be done to rectify practises. "They were going to do stuff about it and said things had changed, but obviously they haven't."

"Seeing all this on the news has really made me angry rather than upset. They haven't learnt anything."

Simon Wright, chief executive of the health trust said: "In recent years independent external reviews have repeatedly shown the trust is progressing and learning lessons but we must strive to do more."

 "Since joining the trust in late 2015 I've seen how our hospitals have been working hard to promote a culture of learning not blame."
